Quality wooden furniture is an investment that, cared for properly, can outlast generations. The basics are simple but easy to forget.
Keep wood away from extremes. Direct sunlight fades finishes and dries out the timber. Radiators and AC vents cause expansion and cracking. Position thoughtfully.
Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth — never wet. Avoid all-purpose sprays and harsh chemicals; they strip finishes. A pH-neutral wood cleaner once a month is enough for most pieces.
Use coasters, placemats, and felt pads. Heat marks, water rings, and scratches are nearly impossible to remove from quality finishes — and entirely preventable.
Polish quarterly with a product matched to your finish (oil for oiled wood, wax for waxed). Re-oil dry-looking pieces every six months.
If something does get damaged, contact a professional restorer. DIY fixes often make things worse.
